3 Zero-Mess Snacks: Healthy "Chocolate Macaroon" Squares & More

If you are looking for simple, nutritious, and comforting treats that require absolutely no baking, these recipes are wonderful to keep on hand. They are packed with protein, healthy fats, and essential minerals like magnesium and potassium to keep your body fueled and feeling good—all made right inside a freezer bag for zero mess! While every recipe on this list is a fantastic energy booster, you will definitely want to scroll to the very end to check out my secret chocolate macaroon copycat square. It uses a clever plant-based protein scoop that completely transforms simple pantry staples into a rich, guilt-free dessert sensation!

In my previous guide on How Older Canadians Can Eat More Protein on a Tight Budget, I shared that skim milk powder and sunflower seeds are two of the absolute cheapest high-quality protein sources you can buy. These zero-mess recipes put those exact pantry staples to work to give you a delicious, budget-friendly energy boost!

📌 Quick Navigation Menu

1. Recommended Equipment

For these easy in a freezer bag no cook recipes you will need:

  • Freezer Personally, I have found if you are trying to choose between getting a refrigerator or a freezer, I would definitely choose an apartment sized freezer like this Frigidaire with the easy drain feature.. When you live on your own a refrigerator is mostly a holder for moldy “science experiments” and condiments. Plus unless you live where it is really hot, you can freeze up a few bottles of water and stick them in a cooler. Your wallet will thank you and you will be surprised at how much less food waste you have.
  • Medium Freezer Bags When I started this experimental freezer bag recipe series I used everyday ordinary freezer bags like these Hefty Bags. These can be easily reused a time or two. I like these because it's easy to see if the bag is closed and the label helps you remember what you stashed inside. However, you might want something a bit sturdier - like these Food-Safe Silicone, Eco-Friendly, Reusable Freezer Bags, by Stasher especially when you are crushing cereal in your bags like in the second recipe (my freezer bag ended up leaking like a sieve - so much for trying to reuse that one!) Stasher’s bags and bowls come with a life-time warranty.

2. Gluten-Free Frozen Raisin & Sunflower Seed Crunch

A close-up photo of a smooth, fudge-like frozen dairy square mixed with organic sunflower seeds and Thompson raisins inside a clear storage bag
A close-up look at our fudge-like gluten-free dairy square, naturally sweetened with Thompson raisins and organic sunflower seeds right inside the bag.

Combine all ingredients in a freezer bag with a little water until mixed. Seal the bag, and lay it flat in the freezer until chilled and firm. Enjoy straight from the bag for a quick, nutrient-dense bite! Tip: Wait a bit if you can otherwise it will stick to your teeth like taffy.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 part Skim Milk Powder
    • 1 part Organic Sunflower Seeds
    • 0.5 part Thompson Raisins
    • A splash of water

📊 Estimated Nutrition Facts (Per Serving)

  • Calories: 210
  • Total Fat: 9g (Saturated Fat: 1g)
  • Sodium: 65mg
  • Total Carbohydrates: 22g
  • Dietary Fiber: 2g
  • Sugars: 15g
  • Protein: 11g

🌿 Nutrient Highlights:

  • Magnesium & Potassium: The sunflower seeds provide a heavy dose of magnesium to help naturally soothe tense muscles and prevent nighttime leg cramps.
  • Calcium & Sodium: Skim milk powder concentrates high-quality dairy calcium and muscle-supporting protein. (As I shared in my senior savings protein guide, milk powder is one of the most cost-effective ways to hit your daily nutritional targets!)
  • Iron & Potassium: Thompson raisins bring in quick, easily absorbed potassium and iron for energy.

3. Raisin Bran Freezer Patties

Mix the crushed Raisin Bran and skim milk powder inside a freezer bag with enough water to bind them. Note:Unless you are using a Food-Safe Silicone, Eco-Friendly, Reusable Freezer Bag, by Stasher do not put water in the bag you used to crush your Raisin Bran in! Don't make my mistake! The sharp edges of the Raisin Bran Flakes made tiny holes in my bag and I had a sticky mess on my hands. Crush your Raisin Bran in the cereal bag or use a new bag to mix your ingredients together. Stasher reusable silicone bags come with a lifetime tough warranty. Squash the mixture completely flat inside the bag and freeze until firm. Once firm, open the bag, pour sunflower seeds on both sides, press them into the mixture, and return to the freezer. Remove from freezer and let thaw. This delicious recipe tastes a bit like caramel blondies.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 part Crushed Raisin Bran Cereal
    • 1 part Skim Milk Powder
    • 1 part Organic Sunflower Seeds(for coating)
    • A splash of water

📊 Estimated Nutrition Facts (Per Serving)

  • Calories: 185
  • Total Fat: 5g (Saturated Fat: 0.5g)
  • Sodium: 140mg
  • Total Carbohydrates: 28g
  • Dietary Fiber: 3.5g
  • Sugars: 16g
  • Protein: 9g

🌿 Nutrient Highlights:

  • Dietary Fiber: The whole-wheat bran cereal delivers excellent dietary fiber to help support steady digestion and blood sugar regulation.
  • Zinc & Phosphorus: Unsalted sunflower seeds add vital heart-healthy unsaturated fats, zinc, and muscle-supporting phosphorus without pushing up your sodium intake.
  • Fat-Free Dairy Protein: Skim milk powder boosts the filling protein content of the cereal base completely fat-free.

4. Chocolate Protein Raisin Bran Squares

Follow the exact same steps as Recipe #2, but add a scoop of Vega Chocolate Protein Powderinto the dry mix before adding water. Flatten, freeze, press the sunflower seeds into both sides, and freeze again for a rich, chocolatey, protein-packed treat! Remove from freezer and let thaw.If desired you can break it up and roll it into protein balls or keep it as a protein bar. This recipe tastes a bit like chocolate macaroons.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 part Crushed Raisin Bran Cereal
    • 1 part Skim Milk Powder
    • 1 scoop Vega Complete Chocolate Protein Powder
    • 1 part Organic Unsalted Sunflower Seeds (for coating)
    • A splash of water

💡 Su's Savvy Taste Note: If you love traditional chocolate macaroons, you are in for a wonderful surprise! The combination of the rich chocolate powder, the crunch of the sunflower seeds, and the chewiness of the bran creates a rich dessert square that tastes a lot like a classic chocolate macaroon—minus the baking hassle!

📊 Estimated Nutrition Facts (Per Serving)

  • Calories: 245
  • Total Fat: 6.5g (Saturated Fat: 1g)
  • Sodium: 210mg
  • Total Carbohydrates: 31g
  • Dietary Fiber: 5g
  • Sugars: 17g
  • Protein: 18g

🌿 Superfood & Nutrient Highlights:

  • Complete Plant Protein Boost: Adding Vega plant-based protein powder infuses high-quality protein per scoop, giving the squares excellent staying power to satisfy your sweet tooth.
  • Veggies & Greens Matrix: Vega introduces real, plant-based whole foods including kale, broccoli, spinach, beets, carrots, and organic spirulina into every batch.
  • Antioxidants & Vitamins: Features 25% DV of 11 key vitamins and minerals—including Vitamins A, C, D, and K—alongside heart-healthy plant-sourced Omega-3 ALA from flaxseed.

💡 Su's Savvy Prep & Storage Tips

The Moisture-Absorption Secret: When you are ready to eat, let your treats sit out of the freezer for a few hours. This allows the raisins to slowly draw in and absorb the surrounding moisture, giving them a fudge-like texture.Eat them too soon and they will stick to your teeth! By freezing the mixture right at the beginning, you keep the milk cold so it never sours during the time required for the raisins to expand!

How Canadian Seniors Save Big Buying Grocery Seconds!

Canadian Grocer Almost Perfect Offers Huge Savings

Almost Perfect Banner Image featuring a penguin with a chef hat and the name The Grocery Outlet

Canadian Seniors fortunate enough to live near a store like Almost Perfect save tonnes of money when they purchase foods that are either frozen prior to the best before date or purchasing foods that have come from damaged boxes. While the retail chain Almost Perfect aka The Grocery Outlet is only available in a few locations in Ontario, perhaps you know of a similar grocer near you that offers the same great reduced prices of similar products.

Every year millions of dollars of perfectly good food end up in garbage bins because the exterior box is not as beautiful as it should be, or the product has not been frozen prior to its best before date.
In some countries, the astronomical loss in foods has been stemmed by the government imposing heavy penalties on grocery stores if they throw out food. I wonder if it might make a difference if such a law were enacted here.
This post has a video of a recipe \made using Maple Leaf pre-cooked ground beef purchased at a greatly reduced cost that had been frozen prior to its best before date.
Do you have a store that prevents food waste near you? Please pop a note in the comments below and let everyone know!

Easy Maple Leaf Prepped and Ready Ground Beef Review and Recipe

If you can get pre-cooked foods at a greatly reduced cost it can save you tonnes of money each year in more ways than one. How many ways can you save by purchasing pre-cooked foods at a greatly reduced cost?
  1. First, you are obviously saving money at the store.
  2. Next, you are saving money on the electricity you would have used in cooking the food.
  3. Lastly, time is money! When you purchase pre-cooked foods at a reduced cost, you are able to use the time you would have taken in cooking the food to do something else.
I admit that it is not always the healthiest diet to be eating foods that are precooked as many contain too much salt or other preservatives, but the occasional meal made with pre-cooked foods -  especially if they are purchased at a greatly reduced cost, can go a long way towards helping you live a more comfortable life.

Maple Leaf Prepped and Ready Ground Beef Review

I purchased the Maple Leaf Prepped and Ready Ground Beef at one of the Almost Perfect Grocery Outlets in Peterborough Ontario when I was camping for only $1.99! This was an incredible deal as it was frozen before the best before date. If you are going camping I highly recommend purchasing precooked meat rather than fresh meat for several reasons:
  1. First, you are not having to carry the extra weight of fat that would be cooked off during the cooking process.
  2. Second, you do not need to be as concerned about keeping the meat cold as if it were fresh.
  3. Third, you do not need to worry about any possible cross-contamination of your other foods either during transport or even during food preparation.
  4. Finally, sometimes it is just too hot in the summer to build a fire to cook your food, so having pre-cooked meat means you can stay cool and enjoy delicious food as well.
I found the Maple Leaf Prepped and Ready Ground Beef to be flavourful even though it had been frozen prior to its best before date.
