16 Smart Phone Apps Savvy Canadian Seniors Use to Help Stretch Their Budgets!

How Can Canadian Seniors Win Against Big Budget Cuts Using Smart Phone Apps?

Smartphone Apps are now offering Canadians a great variety of ways to not only save money but also put a few dollars in their pockets.  However, you do need to be careful. We need to be as smart as serpents and as gentle as doves. Not all Smartphone apps are legitimate.
I am grateful to have been blessed to have been led to some great apps that are legitimate and might help you save on your groceries or even get groceries for free!

This is a growing curated list of Apps that I have personally used that worked well for me. There are two types of apps posted- apps that pay you to upload receipts and apps that will pay you for doing other things like playing games online.

6 Smart Phone Apps That Pay For Your Receipts

So many times I see people leaving their receipts at the store. Oh dear, that is like throwing money away.
Wait! Make sure you take your receipt home!
Or hey, if there is a spare out-of-the-way spot where you can get online and upload a snapshot of your receipt before you get home- even better!

The following apps will pay you for uploading a picture of your receipt.
  1. Receipt Hog.
  2. Caddle
  3. Receipt Jar.
  4. Checkout 51.
  5. Airmiles.
  6. Websaver.

10. Phone Apps That Pay You for Using Them

  1. Rakuten - Rakuten offers cashback for purchases online AND for gift card purchases! I purchase gift cards for myself through Rakuten to use at Shopper's Drug Mart and other Loblaws stores then use the cashback to get more free groceries. Note: It is not a lot, but every bit helps! New to Rakuten? Get $30 bonus cashback on your first purchase of $30 or more when you sign up through my Rakuten link here.
  2. Mode Earn App - Pays you via PayPal for charging, your phone, unlocking your screen, listening to music and more!  Use your free money towards groceries! See details here on the Mode Earn website.

Unlock your screen every 2 hours to earn more points. You got 9 points. Bonus Unlock your screen every 2 hours to earn more points.

  3. Moneywell has paid me in free PayPal for playing free games online through their app.
  4. Mistplay - Pays you in gift cards for playing online games. You can choose from a wide variety of gift cards including Walmart, Amazon or Uber Eats. It's free and easy. They offer special bonus point perks like this 50-point bonus for trying a new game quite regularly, and bonuses for playing late at night etc.

  5. Rewarded Play. This app also pays you for playing online games through their platform. See details here on the App Store Rewarded Play page.
  6. PC Optimum - Scan your app at checkout to get special bonus point offers at No Frills. There may be bonus points for using the app at other stores in the Loblaws chain too such as Shopper's Drug Mart, The Great Canadian Super Store and more. I was previously missing out on these points by just scanning my card in-store before I found out that they offer special prices to people who scan the app. Not sure why none of their cashiers would be authorized to tell people that.
  7. PC Health - Pays you in points for increasing your knowledge of healthy habits. This app pays in PC points that you can then use for free groceries.
  8. Airmiles. There are lots of ways to get free Airmiles- especially if you shop online. Be sure to sign up for your free Airmiles card. You can use your air miles for groceries at Metro.
  9. Metro Grocery Store App. If you shop online with Metro, you can get free air miles to use for free groceries. Be sure to sign up for their emails.  About once every 2 weeks or so I get an email from Metro offering my $10 in free groceries if I purchase 3 items from a specific virtual aisle. Often it was something that was already on my grocery list!
  10. BeWell app from Rexall. Before you head out to make your next Rexall Haul, be sure to download the Rexall BeWell App. Rexall frequently offers a lot more points if you scan their app at checkout.
Do you know of more apps that can help you get free groceries?
If so, please post them in the comments below.
