5 Ways Canadian Seniors Can Save Money On Thanksgiving Spending

Here are a few tips I have gathered from around the Internet that may help you save a bit on your Thanksgiving spending.
  1. Have a traditional North American Thanksgiving meal. Did you know that the first Thanksgiving feast in North America was a potluck? In addition to this, most of the foods were caught - not bought. At the Thanksgiving feast, people shared their harvest of what they had hunted and fished. gathered or grown. True it's a little late to grow much now, but if you look around, you may be surprised at all the food that is sitting waiting to be harvested. At the minimum, it does not have to be up to dear old mum or dad to supply the entire feast. It is written,  "My people have not because they ask not." While this scripture is about asking Our Creator for help- this also applies to friends and family.
  2. Join a Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Many communities frequently have a free Thanksgiving dinner arranged by service clubs or churches. Some are advertised as "Pay -What -You- Can" or "Donations Welcome". You may need to book a seat in advance. One way to find a community dinner could be to look in the "Community" section on Kijiji or search through Facebook events. If you have local cable on your TV,  you can also find announcements of free dinners there.
  3. Use Cheaper Ingredients. Instead of buying a pumpkin pie - why not try making your pie from scratch? Do you need to put the turkey in one whole piece on display? That truly is a want - not a need. Buy a utility turkey. Cut it up and cook it in pieces to reduce cooking time and save electricity. By cooking turkey parts - rather than a whole turkey, you are less likely to give people the "turkey- trots from undercooked meat. Something else to look into - buying just what you need - especially if all your family likes is turkey legs.  Shop the markdown rack in your store where you will find items that are still great, but close to their best-before date. Some stores now offer even deeper discounts through an app called "Flash Foods". These are foods that are at their last sale date and need to be sold ASAP.
  4. Change the Feast! Instead of a Thanksgiving feast, why not go on a photo walk and enjoy the autumn scenery? Ask everyone to bring their picnic lunch to munch. Change the focus from feasting to gratitude and being grateful to be able to be together.
  5. Get Cashback on Your Purchases. If you are thinking -great it's too late for me to save on my Thanksgiving shopping for this year - it's not!  Receipt Hog offers cashback on receipts that are up to two weeks old.
